SPRING 1236

Deborah W., “I wanted to share these photos I took during a couple hikes we did in Shenandoah National Park last weekend — SNP Wildflower Weekend!
The park did an excellent job of programming as there were lots of activities to choose from.  It was our first time attending this event but we’ll definitely be adding it to our permanent calendar.
FYI — Wild trilliums are white until they’re pollinated when they turn a blush pink color, signaling that they have been “had.”  All trillium species belong to the Liliaceae (lily) family.  Red Trillium (Trillium erectum, AKA wakerobin) has no nectar and is pollinated by flies (Diptera) and beetles (Coleoptera).  The petals of the flowers exude an odor that attracts carrion flies and beetles which pollinate the flower.

Needless to say, we learned a lot!”
